SCULPTURE

January 8, 2024 Marcia Landskroener

Celebrating both the power of the natural world and the strength of the human spirit, artist Tilghman Hemsley creates three-dimensional works of art depicting human figures, marine life, waterfowl, and more. His creatiins are fabricated primarily of bronze, resin, and stainless steel.

Among his most recent three-dimensional works are a swan installation (above) for Sandy Springs Bank and a replica of the marble Christopher Columbus statue he fished out of the Baltimore Inner Harbor and salvaged in 2020.

OTHER REPRESENTATIVE WORKS

Maryland Waterman’s Monument

This bronze statue of two men in a rowboat was dedicated in 2003 to honor those who died while commercial fishing in the Chesapeake Bay.  Funded by private donations, the project took five years to complete.

The project was spearheaded by George O’Donnell, a two-time Queen Anne’s County Commissioner and former commercial fisherman who worked closely with the artist to bring this project to fruition. O’Donnell now serves as the Fisheries & Boating Customer Relations Manager for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
